Obituary for Steven Lee Ballou

Steven Lee Ballou, a devoted family man and loving husband, passed away Oct. 18, 2019, in Oxford, MI, after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 62. Born in Detroit, Steve graduated from Detroit Cody High School in 1976 and went to work on oil rigs in early 1980s from Texas to Montana. He returned to Detroit and started his own cement company. While self-employed, Steve attended trade school until he earned his degree as a stationary engineer. After earning his degree, he managed heating and cooling systems for Detroit Public Schools for many years. He later served as building engineer for the One Woodward Building, a 30-story office structure in downtown Detroit.

Affectionately nicknamed “Bubba” by his wife, Barbara, Steve died on what was their 22nd anniversary. The two had been a couple since Oct. 14, 1974, when Steve first asked Barbara to “go steady.” A responsible realist in life, Steve always was preparing for the future and any possible hard times that might come. His daughters recalled his frugal financial advice and that he was always watchful of how they were spending and investing their hard-earned money. He was also a protective father, once teaching them in their early 20s to change a tire on a car before he would allow them to take a long road trip to Wyoming.

Steve loved the outdoors, from camping and canoeing and boating to fishing for everything from pan fish on nearby Lake Michelson in Oxford to salmon on the west side of the state. The American West also figured prominently in Steve’s life, starting with his work experiences. He passed that love along to his family on a memorable trip to Montana and Yellowstone – instilling in Taylor a lifelong love of traveling, the mountains and wide-open spaces. Steve enjoyed sports and in particular was a Detroit Tigers fan, owing to a love of baseball he acquired playing the game as a youth. A decade-long member of the Sons of The American Legion, Squadron 233, Lake Orion, MI, Steve enjoyed spending time with his American Legion family and participating in many events and volunteering to assist with fundraisers for the organization.

Steve is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Taylor; Alyssa (McFall), whom he loved like a second daughter; sisters JoAnn (Jim) Byrn, and Pat (Bob) Huss; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence (“Freck”) and Irene, and a number of siblings.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday Oct. 24 and 4-8 p.m. Friday Oct. 25. Rosary Service will be 6 p.m. Friday, followed by a Sons of The American Legion observance. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday Oct. 26 at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 39 W. Burdick, Oxford, followed by burial at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Oxford.
