Obituary for Roy King

Roy King “Grandpa”, 96, passed away September 18, 2019. Roy was preceded in death by his loving wife Gladys. He was the father to two children, Sue Gee (Dave) and Steve King (Terry). The grandfather to five grandchildren, Kathy (Derek), Kris, Brandy, Cody and Josh. He was also the great grandfather to one, Alison.

Roy served in the Army during WWII in the 39th Infantry Regiment (“The Fighting Falcons”) of the 9th Infantry Division (“The Old Reliables”). Roy carried a bazooka during the war as an infantryman. Roy was in campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium and Germany. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day but the worst combat was in the Hürtgen Forest in Germany. On 9/14/1944, he received his first purple heart on the first day of operations in the Hürtgen Forest. He says he was shot in the butt. On 9/27/1944 he received his second purple heart in the Hürtgen Forest after an artillery shell exploded in the trees above him. He said he looked like a porcupine from the tree splinters and shrapnel in his back side. On 4/2/1945 he lost his leg just 5 weeks before V-E Day.

He married his sweetheart Gladys Kessler in September of 1945. They resided first in Lapeer, then later in Oxford Michigan. Finally they built a house in Lake Orion in 1955. Gladys died in June of 1999. Dad continued to live there until 2002 when he moved in with his son, Steve in Virginia.

Roy retired from Michigan Bell Telephone July 8, 1988. He and Gladys spent many enjoyable winters in Florida. Family meant the world to him and Gladys. They hosted many a family get togethers throughout the years from New Years to Christmas. Roy was the baby of the family. All his siblings (Louise, Harley and Darrel) had already passed.
