Robert Neil Arnold, 83, passed away on December 7, 2012 at his home in Clarkston, Michigan. He was born on August 3, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to Harry R. and Janet R. (Aikenhead) Arnold.
Robert grew up in Detroit, Michigan. In 1945 in the last days of World War II, Robert managed to enlist in the United States Navy at age 16 and served on the USS Johnnie Hutchins and the USS Woodson. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1946, achieving the rank of Seaman Second Class USNR. Robert received a General Discharge in 1951, achieving the rank of Seaman Apprentice, V-6 USNR.
Following the War, Robert graduated into the paint business a paint manufacturer’s sales agent. In 1951 at the time of the Korean War, he was drafted into the United States Army. He spent two years in Germany before returning home to work as a travelling paint salesman. Robert was transferred to the Army Reserve in 1953 and received an Honorable Discharge in 1956, achieving the rank of Corporal.
Following his military service, Robert’s passion with paint turned to painting as an artist, with his work being displayed at the Redford Township Public Library. Robert was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 345 (Redford Township). Robert is predeceased by his sister, Shirley Janet Hietala, and is survived by nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are being made through Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 39 W. Burdick Street, Oxford, Michigan. Interment with military honors will be at the Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Road, Holly, Michigan on Friday, December 14, 2012, with services to start promptly at 10:30 a.m.
