Obituary for Robert 'Bob' William Best

Bob was many things, as is outlined in the subsequent paragraphs, but first and foremost he was a devoted son, a loving brother, a provider and protector for his wife, a dedicated father, and an adoring grandfather.

Robert (Bob) William Best passed away peacefully with his wife, Jessie, at his side on the morning of Wednesday, June 10, 2015. He was 73. Born November 19, 1941 in Windsor, Ontario to the late Lorne and Mabel Best. He married Jessie (Parrigin) Best on February 10, 1962. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years; brother Lorne Best; two children, Lisa Taddiken (Russell; deceased) and Christine Kepich (Christopher); five grandchildren, Christopher, Rebecca, and Rachael Taddiken and Joshua and Jonathon Kepich. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Barbara Sardonell; and his mother-in-law whom he cared for with great compassion in her later years, Frances Flohr.

Bob graduated from Cooley High School in 1959 where he was ranked lieutenant for organization and management of his ROTC unit. Following his time as a paper delivery captain, he transitioned to the Detroit News Circulation Department. During his 30 years of employment he also gave graciously of his time as the PTA president of McGowan Elementary in Redford Township and was a contributing member of the Detroit Power Squadron, teaching boater safety classes through community education. One of his joys in life was being the Scoutmaster of the Sea Scouts of Belle River, Canada. In 1974, one of his capstone projects with the scouts was the creation and subsequent archival of a documentary which was placed in a time capsule in the community park and to be opened in 2022.

Following his retirement from the Detroit News, Bob launched a second career as a self-employed producer of unique videos and movies including weddings, family events and memories, and personal projects which held great meaning to him. Throughout his retired years he enjoyed time with friends, family, dogs, and pursued his interests of boating, videography, and a simple life at his cottage.

Above all, Bob loved and cherished his family. He was selfless and giving with family, friends, and neighbors, no matter the personal cost to himself. His independent and creative spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.
