Robert Easton Godkin passed away on May 26, 2019. Born on April 12, 1934, Bob recently celebrated his 85th birthday in April. He was a graduate of Oxford High School, class of 1952. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1954 and served 4 years on Long Island, New York. Bob married his sweetheart, Gwen (Gark) of Oxford, in 1956. Bob and Gwen were married for 63 years.
Bob began working at General Motors in 1962 and retired as a supervisor. After retirement, Bob started a chimney sweeping and lawn maintenance company named Oxford All Seasons, which he ran for 20 years before selling it. Bob worked tirelessly at the Lakeville Cemetery and on the Polly Ann Trail. He was involved in getting the Arnold School House on Lakeville Road moved to it’s new site on the Watershed Preserve in Leonard. Bob is a direct descendent of the builders of that schoolhouse. Bob lived on Lakeville Road his entire life. He was an avid wood worker and created some very beautiful frames and music boxes made from exotic wood. If there was a project in his community, rest assured, he was involved. Bob loved snowmobiling and was a longtime member and past president of the SnomadS Snofari Club.
Of all his achievements, Bob’s family was by far the most important thing in his life. He was a very patriotic man and loved his country. Even the message of his phone says, “Stand Tall, be Proud to be an American.”
Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Marion Haddrill, and is survived by his wife Gwen, his 2 daughters: Kim (Dennis) Weber of Waterford, and Amy Saurini, of Harrison Township, his 3 grandchildren: David (Jessica) Drost, Austin Drost, Anton Saurini, and his one great-grandson, Easton Drost.
Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors, 39 W. Burdick, Oxford on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 from 4-8 PM. A graveside service with military honors will take place at Lakeville Cemetery, 825 E. Drahner Rd, Leonard on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 1 PM.
