Obituary for Mary Van Doran

Mary (Martin, Bilpuch) Van Doran, Age 72, Oxford, MI passed away Tuesday August 17, 2021. Born October 20, 1948 in Detroit, MI to Roderick and Edna (DeWitt) Martin, dear sister to Roderick (Lillian), Malcolm (Helen), Harvey (Joan), Thomas (Philetha) and Margret (Raymond) Plofchan. Mary loved her Lord, family, and dear friends. She lived her life for the Lord, first and foremost. Giving all glory to Him for the shower of blessings she cherished. She was active in many churches, serving eagerly and spreading the gospel. She entered every room with a smile, laughter, and love. She loved her family with all of her being.

She married Greg Bilpuch in 1970. They joked about dating under a Model A. Many memories of their marriage involved the Model A club, rumble seats, classic cars, flea markets and antique shopping. She was the devoted mother to Kristen (Kevin) Gretka and Wendy (Jeff) Edgett. Mary loved being a mom and everything that went along with it. As PTO president, no one could throw a school carnival like she did. Aunt Mary’s house was always the best place to be, her nieces and nephews and their families were always welcome to be her sidekicks or hunt for frogs. The Martin clan is a big, crazy bunch, and she loved them all dearly. She was a talented oil painter and stain glass artist. She loved to travel; Hawaii and Bavaria amongst her favorite destinations. She was the type of person who was a friend for life as Audrey, Kathy, John, Vicky, Carole, Tony, Mickey, Bill, Char… and so many more can confirm.

Through the 1990’s, she worked at Oxford High School. She started as a teacher’s assistant in the auto and machine shop classes. She didn’t let being a little lady stop her from challenging those tough boys! She quickly found her passion serving as an advocate to high risk and struggling students. She adopted each as her own, loved them, and pushed them to achieve what they thought would be impossible. She was their greatest cheerleader to her very last days. Mrs. “B” loved her kids with all she had. She was awarded Teacher of the Year, which she treasured, but not nearly as much as watching her kids succeed. She retired to care for her aging parents and selflessly gave her time and life to their care. Her greatest occupation: Grandma. She massively loved everyone in her life, but that paled in comparison to how she loved her grandchildren. Shelbie (Jordan), Kaden (Hannah), Tobias (Paige), Kendall (Mason), and Garrett (Libbie) were her greatest earthly treasures.

In 2003, she married Douglas Van Doran and at that moment, his children, Nikki and Michael became hers as well. They shared many wonderful years together traveling, serving God side by side, and loving on their sweet dogs. Mary was diagnosed with Interstitial pulmonary fibrosis and even though it slowed her down, it never impeded her ability to give generously, love unconditionally and praise the Lord unceasingly.

In keeping with Mary’s exuberance for life the family would like to request that no black or dark clothing be worn, instead wearing bright and cheerful colors to help remember and honor Mary’s personality and spirit.
