Obituary for Loraine Esenwein Hoxie

Loraine Fredericka Hoxie (Esenwein) formerly of Lapeer died peacefully in Lake Orion. Loraine, only daughter of German immigrants, was born to Frederick G. and Fredricka Esenwein( Bonzheim) in Grand Rapids. Half-siblings, Edmund, Edwina and Esther Esenwein predeceased her. She graduated from Union High School and spent time at Grand Rapids Junior College. In 1940 she married Ralph A. Hoxie (1917-85). She is survived by children Ralph A. II, Douglas (Cyndi), Fredricka, Brian (Michele) and Michael (Kim). Loraine and Ralph raised their family in West Bloomfield where Loraine was active in PTA, Boy Scouts, March of Dimes, Oakland County Republicans, and Oakland County 4-H. A dedicated grandmother to 22 and many great grandchildren, Loraine was often at graduations or weddings across the country.
In 1985 she assumed role of president of Basic Service, the family business founded in 1946, and was actively involved until the last two years. Loraine loved life and square danced into her 70s. A consummate traveler, she made trips to Germany, Korea, an African safari, Alaska, white water rafting, an Italian cruise and just three years ago to the Galapagos Islands. She was continually learning and sharing her experiences and many photos. Championing women and as a member of ABWA Loraine worked as the Education Chair and supervised the ABWA program that provides those scholarships.
After moving to Lincoln Commons condominiums in Lapeer she was involved as president and secretary. As part of area travelers groups day trips to Shakespeare festival and the Princess Diana exhibit were hugely enjoyed. A lifelong dream was realized with stage parts in the Lapeer Community Theater and activities in wardrobe and tickets.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Multiple Myeloma at or ABWA Great Oakland Charter Scholarship fund.
