Obituary for Kim Ahlborn

“By God’s love and mercy, he calls and draws all men to him. ‘Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.’”- Matthew 11:28

She saw the beauty in everyone, and everyone saw profound grace in her. Kim Suzore Ahlborn put family and friends first. Always.

Kim was a resident of Oxford for the last 50 years, a cosmetologist, business owner, Mary Kay rep, champion peanut butter square maker, family photographer, jewelry crafter, embroiderer extraordinaire, indie-music promoter, and stellar gift giver. Her husband Larry, son Larry, daughter Deb, granddaughters Issabelle and Addison, and nephew Paul hold the center of her heart. But Kim had the uncanny ability to expand that heart exponentially, embracing ever-so-tightly her sisters Debbie and Leia, brother Jerry, nieces and nephews Josh, Taryn, Gabbi, Jordan, and Ryan into her heart effortlessly. Quick to laugh, Kim brought goodness and unending generosity everywhere she went. Her brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, and multitude of friends upon friends, always looked to Kim to offer a happy thought, a smile until her eyes crinkled, and to add more to her Fiestaware plate without a second thought.

Kim’s parents, Joyce Woodbeck and Jerry Suzore, instilled in her a love for people, for beauty, and for bettering the world in which we live. She was sparkly, in body and spirit! Her bracelet-lavished arms gave flowers to those needing a pick-me-up, tugged blankets up around our kids while they watched scary movies with her in the dark of her cabin, pumped ferociously doing a 5K, shared Keith Urban clips, and adorned those she loved with crosses, crafted goods, and the latest “just right” personal gift. She gave her loving talents to Lake Orion United Methodist Church, worshipped with Woodside Bible Church, and was an advocate for organ donation, with unfailing faith and devotion to her beliefs.

Whether sipping “cabin coffee” on her cherished porch, shopping with “her girls” in Petoskey, ferociously clapping for Larry’s music, shrieking with exhilaration from the front row of Cedar Point coasters with her boys, or meticulously painting the nails of her nieces and precious granddaughters, (“Oh, them girls!”), Kim brought an inner force of pride, passion, and admiration to everyone in her life. Her small frame was deceivingly full of potent strength, and her megawatt smile exemplified the power of love. Our hearts are aching so terribly; but, the sheer energy Kim enveloped all of us in, will help us heal. Isn’t that just like Kim… to give us the tools to heal from losing her?

Kim’s table always had an extra chair, both figuratively, and literally. And if a chair wasn’t readily available, she’d stand so others could sit. Up north at her House in the Woods, Kim made sure it had an open door, where we all knew we could find some pickles and cheese, raid her candy drawer, get a Diet Pepsi, or just snuggle on the couch. Kim is survived by a huge family, and too many friends to count. She treated everyone as her sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews, and was another mother to friends of her kids. Kim is so very dearly loved by so many, and will be sorely missed by us all.

Her warrior spirit fought a long and daunting battle, but Kim never gave up, and never gave in. Her only complaint was being so cold, and there is no doubt that Kim’s heaven has a beach and unending hot sun.

“Go in peace, my treasured child, be warmed and be made whole.” – James 2:16
