Obituary for Kathryn Wellington

Kathryn Ann Wellington was born January 1, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan, and died peacefully on October 8, 2020. Kathryn was the daughter of Francis Edward Lyons and Edwardine Marie Peabody Lyons. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard Wellington, as well as four brothers, and one sister: Michael Delisle Lyons (Vernice), Richard Joseph Lyons (Colleen), Robert Edmond Lyons (Nancy) (Linda), Gerald Navarre Lyons (Barbara), and Virginia Marie Long (Bruce), and is survived by one sister, Jane Francis Burke.

Kay graduated from St Elizabeth Catholic High School in Wyandotte, Michigan. After graduation, she entered the Immaculate Heart of Mary IHM mother house in Monroe, Michigan. She accepted Sister Gerald Marie for her name and served in the religious order for 17 years, which included several years as a Catholic school teacher for both elementary and high school students.
After leaving the IHM order, Kay was employed with the Neighborhood Church at a parish in Lansing, Michigan, while earning her Master’s Degree in counseling at Oakland University. During this time, she met and married the love of her life, Richard Wellington. Kay enjoyed working for a time as a family counselor, and through this work she and Richard saw the need for parents willing to care for children in the foster care system. Together they adopted 11 children: Michael, Robert, Charles, James, Ronald, Ray, Lori, Larry, Bill, Raymond, and Mohson. Kay and Richard also fostered 34 more children over a period of many years. Needless to say, Kay was a caring and loving person.

Kathryn loved living in Oxford. She had many friends, and if you were lucky enough to go out to lunch with her there, you could expect many interruptions from them! Kay especially enjoyed her friendships with Gemma and Steve. Both of these friends were important to her up to the end of her life.

Kay was an active parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Orion, Michigan. She and Richard worked as marriage preparation counselors, and she participated in the RCIA and on the Adoration Chapel committee.

Kay will be missed by NUMEROUS nieces, nephews, and friends, but most of all by her beloved sister Jane, who will miss her laughing companion and favorite phone conversation partner.

A mass in celebration of Kay’s life will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2020, at St Joseph Catholic Church, 715 N. Lapeer Rd, Lake Orion. Visitation will take place in the back of the church from 10:30 to 11:00 am. Mass will follow at 11:00 am.

***Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to try to adhere to social distancing guidelines, the visitation time at the church will be structured differently than pre-pandemic gathering times. First, St. Joseph Catholic Church requires the use of a face mask to enter the church. During non-pandemic times, the half hour of visitation would be used as a time to gather and visit with one another. To avoid large group gatherings within the church, we are inviting people as they enter the church to have the opportunity to approach the casket and pay your final respects, and then we would ask that those people who are staying for the funeral mass please go into the sanctuary to be seated in the designated ares that are open. We want to avoid groups of people congregating in the lobby area as would be customary. Also, at approximately 10:50 AM, the family will begin the process of paying their final respects, so we would strongly encourage that those people who would like to pass by the casket arrive between 10:30- 10:45 AM.
