Obituary for John Roger Dodson

John Roger Dodson, age 76, joined his heavenly father early on June 12th, 2016 while at his home in Oxford, Michigan, with his loving family at his side.

John, the older of two boys, was born on August 24th, 1939 in the town of Yale, MI. He served in our nation’s military for 20 years, earning his commission as a supply officer in the United States Navy and later retiring with the rank of Commander from the US Naval Reserve. Following military service, John joined AC Spark Plug’s Purchasing Department in Flint, MI. He later continued proudly serving his country as a civilian, working as a packaging engineer with U.S. Army TACOM in Warren, MI.

John married the love of his life, Kathryn, on June 13, 1964. He earned his bachelor’s degree from University of Detroit and later a Masters degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. John and Kathryn, both believers in the power of education, were immeasurably proud that all five of their daughters earned advanced university degrees.

John was a devout Catholic who passionately shared his faith with those around him. As a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lake Orion, MI, he served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Adult Acolyte, participated in Perpetual Adoration, and was a member of the Bravehearts. John stayed close to his farming roots by joining a community garden, and spent many hours working his six-acre farm. An avid outdoorsman with a healthy respect for the environment, John was a member of the Hiawatha Sportman’s Club, located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. He especially loved to fish with his family, whether on many trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Alaskan wilderness, or on one of Michigan’s beautiful lakes. A reflection of his adventurous spirit, John traveled the world with Kathryn, visiting over 16 countries in the last 20 years.

John was preceded in death by his mother and father, Janet (Tesluck) and John Dodson.

John is survived by his wife of 52years, Kathryn (Burnside) of Oxford, MI; daughter Marie Smith and her three children - Noah, Laura, and Emma – all of Indianapolis, IN; daughter Cynthia Campbell, her husband Christopher of Ann Arbor, MI and their two daughters, Katherine of Ann Arbor, MI and Emily of New York, NY; daughter Kelly Lawniczak, her husband Jeremy and their three children – Duncan, Josephine and Jonathan – all of Ocala, FL; daughter Catherine Molloseau, her husband, Bryan and their three children – Jacqueline, Coleman, and Alexandria – all of Portland, OR; daughter Caroline Rhodes, her husband Matthew and their two children – Evan and Amelia – all of Stevensville, MI; sister Lisa Smith of Jacksonville, FL;, brother Dennis Dodson (Barbara) of Rochester, MI, as well as nieces, nephews and dear friends.

The family would like to thank the University of Michigan’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, and in particular Dr. Susan G. Urba, for its outstanding service and genuine care for John’s comfort, as well as Hospice of Michigan.
