Obituary for James Akers

James Robert Akers, born June 5, 1929 in Weeksbury, KY. James "Claude" was a beloved husband, father, and papa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Mae, mother Zettie, father Fred, and brother Arthur Bill. He is survived by daughters Donita Adams (Randy), Sharon Niebrzydowski (Larry), and Lynn Edwards (Warren). He is also survived by his grandchildren Randy Adams, James Adams, Rebecca Hernandez, Charity Scherer, Matthew Edwards, and Lindsay Rhodes. James also had 12 great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Roger Akers.

James married the love of his life, Ida Mae Barnes, on January 6, 1950. They made their home in Wyandotte, MI for 65 years until Ida passed away in 2015. He was a general foreman at Great Lakes Steel for 38 years.

The most important fact about James was that he loved God and his family. He was a member of the Church of Christ for his entire adult life. He loved sharing his faith with everyone he met. He served as an Elder in the church for many years and also worked with the many families that needed counseling and assisting those families in need. No one was ever hungry when James was around. He was a very giving soul and wanted everyone to be happy.

A special thanks to his loving caregiver Octavia Jones, for taking such good care of him for 14 months. She became James' "other daughter" and the family will be forever grateful for the love she showered upon him until the very end.

James passed peacefully on Saturday February 19, 2022 at the age of 92.
A memorial service will take place to honor James' life on:
