Horst Prawdzik, lovingly known as Daddio and Little Horsty, died on January 1, 2016 at the age of 82 following a long illness with dementia.
Horst was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1933, and so began his life-long passion for seafood. He loved to work with his hands and became an accomplished skilled tradesman.
Horst immigrated to Canada to advance his career, and met the German girl of his dreams, Lilly. After wooing her with jokes, teasing, and tasty treats, he charmed her into marrying him. They later settled in Detroit, Michigan, where he became a proficient wood pattern maker at General Motors.
For fun, Horst and Lil bought a 100 acre farm and proceeded to raise beef cattle and cultivate enormous gardens, long before organic was in vogue. Horst kept his three children, Pete, Dave and Lisa busy on the farm, and taught them important lessons about family bonding through work.
Horst couldn’t resist a bargain, and was an avid coupon clipper, much to his wife’s dismay. He had an eclectic appetite and loved such delicacies as cold oatmeal with raisins, pickled herring in cream, and chicken fricassee with capers.
He is survived by his sweetheart Lil of 59 years; children Pete (Antoinette), Dave (Debby), and Lisa (Praveen); and grandchildren Max, Marina, Miranda, Andreas, Lucas, Marcus, and Prateik.
A memorial service celebrating Horst’s life is planned for Saturday, January 16 at 2:00 PM at the Oxford United Methodist Church. Friends may visit from 1:00 PM until time of service. Memorial donations can be made to the Oxford United Methodist Church or Evangelical Home of Sterling Heights.
