Gloria Marie (Smith) McCabe Age 83.
Born into this World on March 8, 1925 in Posen, MI.
Called Home to Heaven on December 13, 2008 in Oxford Township, MI.
Gloria was born in Posen, MI to Frank Smith and Lena (Adams) Smith. Frank owned the general store in Posen with his father Joseph Smith. She graduated from St. Casimir Catholic Grade School and Posen High School. She attended Michigan State University, was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology in 1946.
She married Emmett "Bud’ McCabe a World War II veteran of Detroit, MI in 1949 at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Posen. Gloria retired from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac as a Senior Medical Technologist after working in the Laboratory there from 1969 to 1988. She was regularly called to the pediatric wing because of her compassionate care and exceptional skill in helping children. She was also a substitute grade school teacher for the Bloomfield Hills and Avondale School Districts.
Gloria and Bud raised 4 sons Mark, the Chief Judge of the 67th Distinct Court in Fenton, MI; Michael the Undersheriff of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office in Pontiac, MI; Martin, a PGA of America Class A Golf Professional in Orange County, California; and Matthew, the Director of Risk Management and Insurance at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. They raised the 4 boys at their home they built on Squirrel Road in Bloomfield Township. They lived together there for 54 years before moving to Oxford Township to live across the street from one of their sons, Michael in 2003. Gloria was preceded in death by her husband Emmett in November of 2006 and by her sisters Katherine Smith and Virginia (Smith) Neubert and her brothers Gerald Smith and Francis Smith.
Gloria and Bud maintained a summer cottage on the north end of Grand Lake in Presque Isle County that her father and mother built in 1925 the same year she was born. They loved to visit the lake in the summer and enjoyed the entire "Sunrise Side" of Michigan. Gloria loved the outdoors and loved tending to her flower gardens on Squirrel Road and then in her Oxford Township home. She was blessed with the uncanny ability to save dying plants and flowers with her green thumb. At the time of her death she still tended to a "Christmas Cactus" that she was given to her by relatives in Posen when she was a little girl. By all accounts this cactus is over 85 years old and is still healthy and growing today!
A private ceremony was recently held in her honor.
She is survived by her 4 sons and 7 granddaughters.
Submitted by her sons Michael McCabe and Matthew McCabe
