Obituary for Gerald R. Griffin Sr.

Gerald R. Griffin Sr., "Jerry", age 87, May 1, 2016. A lifelong resident of Oxford, Jerry was born in Addison Township, Michigan in 1928, one of seven children of Charles & Lottie Griffin. He is survived his beloved wife, Evelyn, whom he married in 1950; his children Gerald R. Griffin Jr. of Oxford, Jayne (Tom) Hadden of Lake Orion, Jeffrey A. (Mary Ellen) Griffin of Kokomo, Indiana, and Jonathan Griffin of Oxford; grandchildren Julie, Jennifer, Kelly, Kadra, Kelsey, Jessica, Shelby and Jacob; and great-grandchildren David, Emily, Tessa, Melissa, Marion and Maddison.

A 1946 graduate of Oxford High School. He graduated from the Detroit Business Institute in 1951 with an accounting degree. He retired from General Motors in 1984 after 36 ½ years as an accountant.

Jerry started to work “part time” for the Bossardet Funeral Home in Oxford in February 1957 and had maintained active employment ever since, working directly with Edward and John Bossardet, and then staying on when Tim and Jennifer Lynch acquired the funeral home from the Bossardet family in 2002. In his over five decades of employment, he had worked in all phases of funeral home service and is one of the contributing factors as to why the funeral home has maintained a positive reputation within its community. In 2005 the Bossardet and Lynch families honored Jerry with the “Outstanding Service Award” for his exemplary contributions towards servicing the families of Oxford.

Jerry has been a member of the Oxford United Methodist church for over 50 years. He was also active in many community organizations, including Past District Governor of Lions Club International, Past President of the Oxford Veterans Association, Life member of American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars, and Past President of the Oxford Lions Club. Also he has served on several committees for the Township of Oxford (Election Boards, Tax Board of Review, and recently 27 years on the Oxford Area Cable commission). Past President and Curator of the Northeast Oakland Historical Society, and served on the Advisory Board of the Oxford POH Health Care Center and Beaumont Silent Children's Board.
