Obituary for George Schraut

On Wednesday, June 24, 2020, George Thomas Schraut – a beloved parent, Papa, and Coach – passed away peacefully in his home. He was 68.

George was born on April 27, 1952, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His family resided in Traverse City, MI from 1957-1966, after which they moved to Naperville, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He excelled in football, discus, and shotput at Naperville High School, breaking many school records. He later earned a Degree in Business at Illinois State University. After college, George moved to Oxford, Michigan, on Davis Lake. He worked for 24 years for Liberty Mutual as a Litigation Insurance Adjuster and coached track and field for Oxford High School for 38 years.

George had tremendous influence on the lives of his children and grandchildren as well as hundreds of students he mentored and coached over the years. George, regarded by many as the “Gentle Giant”, was happiest when he was spending time with his family, coaching at the track, watching football games, or reading at the beach in Emerald Isle, North Carolina – his favorite family vacation location. He was a history enthusiast and fond of building motorized model battleships and tanks, with which he competed in a variety of clubs. George looked forward each year to sending out his Christmas Letter, edited by his sister, Barbara, with updates on his family and himself.

George had a strong love and connection with his sister, Barbara, her late husband Lanny, and their children Zach and Katie, and Zach's son Ellis. He was so proud of his six stepchildren, Robyn, Nancy, Faris (Kristen), Danielle (Brian), Louise (Dave), and Lauren and his ten grandchildren. George was patient, loyal, loving, generous, wise and witty with a great sense of humor. He has left an incredible legacy and impression on his family, friends, and community; he will be deeply missed.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George E. and Margaret L. Schraut, and brother-in-law, Lanny Havercamp; and is survived by his older sisters Barbara Havercamp and Peggy (Pete) Snodgrass, as well as his nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, stepchildren and grandchildren.

A funeral mass will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 715 N. Lapeer Rd, Lake Orion on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at 11 AM with visitation beginning at the church at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the World Wildlife Fund in honor of George.

***Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to try to adhere to social distancing guidelines, the visitation time at the church will be structured differently than pre-pandemic gathering times. First, St. Joseph Catholic Church requires the use of a face mask to enter the church. During non-pandemic times, the hour of visitation would be used as a time to gather and visit with one another. To avoid large group gatherings within the church, we are inviting people as they enter the church to have the opportunity to approach the casket and pay your final respects, and then we would ask that those people who are staying for the funeral mass please go into the sanctuary to be seated in the designated ares that are open. We want to avoid groups of people congregating in the lobby area as would be customary. Also, at approximately 10:50 AM, the family will begin the process of paying their final respects, so we would strongly encourage that those people who would like to pass by the casket arrive before 10:45 AM.
