Obituary for George Meyer

George passed away peacefully May 28, 2017 at his home in Oxford Michigan with his family by his side. He was born on December 31, 1931 at Cottage Hospital in Grosse Pointe Park Michigan, the only child of John C. and Margarete (Busch) Meyer. He graduated the class of 1949 from Denby High School in Detroit Michigan where he excelled in academics, swim team and the boy scouts. George went on to Michigan State University pledging the Delta Chi fraternity and going into the Air Force ROTC. Upon graduating from MSU with a BA in business he joined the USAF and quickly rose through the ranks to become an officer and pilot taking pride in flying a Boeing 47A Stratojet. He served his country for 4 years and then moved on to earn his MBA from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor Michigan.

He then met the love of his life Sandra ‘Miffy’ Lynn Pippel and they were married on August 6, 1966 at the First Presbyterian Church in Dearborn Michigan. They were blessed with three wonderful children, Julie, Karen, and John C. Meyer II and finally settling down in Beverly Hills Michigan to raise their family. George worked for IBM in South Bend Indiana as well as in the Detroit area for 30 years. After retirement from IBM, he ventured into sales of in-car cameras for local, county and state police departments around the United States. In 1999 he started a factoring company, Commission Express of Southeast Michigan, advancing real estate commissions with the help of his oldest daughter, Julie who still manages it to this day.

George lived life to the fullest as an avid and talented downhill skier, hanging up this skis at the young age of 80. He could tell a joke like no other! He enjoyed golf and singing regularly with the Redford Harmony Club, a local barbershop quartet group. He was an accomplished piano player and was known as the ‘piano man’ by all who knew him. He also enjoyed a great game of scrabble as well as bridge. He spent most of his retirement traveling between international travel and the great outdoors of the upper peninsula of Michigan.

As a proud MSU graduate, he faithfully cheered on his beloved Spartans by holding season football tickets for over 50 years. He lived a full and wonderful life. A true gentleman to the end, he had a true fan club at his last place of residence Independence Village in Oxford.

George was preceeded in death by his father, John, mother Margarete and wife Miffy. He is survived by his daughters Julie (Mark) Diaz of Holly, Karen (Todd) Matczak of Oxford and his son, John C. Meyer II of Los Angeles. Also surviving are his 7 grandchildren, Ryan Bruning, Eric Bruning, Meagan Diaz, Tyler Diaz, Alexander Matczak, Ethan Matczak, Addison Matczak, and one great grandchild Merrick Brammer.

Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors, 39 W. Burdick, Oxford, on Thursday, June 1, 2017 from 3-7 PM with a funeral service beginning at 7 PM. Pastor Dave Gerber will be officiating followed by military honors.
