Obituary for Frank de Hesselle

Frank E.P. de Hesselle of Lapeer, Michigan passed away peacefully on September 5, 2020. He was 73.

Frank was born on February 5, 1947 to Pascal and Julia de Hesselle of Heerlen, The Netherlands. He was married for nearly 48 years to his beloved wife and soulmate Elizabeth. He was a loving and principled man who set the standards for selflessness, respect and integrity.

Frank served as a Foreign Student Advisor, working for over 35 years at Lawrence Technological University (LTU) in Southfield, Michigan. As a former foreign student himself, Frank took great pride in helping other foreign students on their path to living the American dream. Over his career, Frank also served as a mechanical engineer at Federal Mogul, as an adjunct Engineering professor at Lawrence Tech, and as an advisor to LTU student teams who designed and built national-award-winning hybrid electric vehicles long before they were mainstream.

Frank earned two Bachelor’s degrees at Lawrence Tech -- one in Mechanical Engineering and another in Industrial Management. He’d also studied at Delft University of Technology in Holland.

He was proud of his Dutch heritage, and also very proud to become a United States citizen in 1995.

An avid engineer and car fanatic, Frank could never get enough of cars -- designing them, building them, tuning them and racing them. Second only to his love for his family, Formula One was his passion. In his younger days, Frank also participated in other sports: he raced motocross; he raced sidecar motorcycles; he excelled as a soccer goalie; he loved to sail; and he was an excellent skier -- even serving as a ski patrolman in the Swiss Alps.

Frank is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; two brothers: Guus and Pascal; two sons and spouses: Pascal (Julie) and Eric (Sheri); four grandchildren: Olivia, Luke, Matthew, and Ashley; and by friends and extended family all over the world. He is preceded in death by his parents, Pascal and Julia, and sister-in-law, Tiny.

He will be missed dearly.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 715 North Lapeer Road of Lake Orion, Michigan. Visitation will be at 9:30am EST, Mass will follow at 10:00am EST; the Mass will also be livestreamed (https://www.youtube.com/user/stjosephmassarchive/videos). A private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made using the link under the "memorial contributions" tab below; donations will be used to offset unexpected emergency medical costs and final expenses.

***Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to try to adhere to social distancing guidelines, the visitation time at the church will be structured differently than pre-pandemic gathering times. First, St. Joseph Catholic Church requires the use of a face mask to enter the church. During non-pandemic times, the half hour of visitation would be used as a time to gather and visit with one another. To avoid large group gatherings within the church, we are inviting people as they enter the church to have the opportunity to approach the casket and pay your final respects, and then we would ask that those people who are staying for the funeral mass please go into the sanctuary to be seated in the designated ares that are open. We want to avoid groups of people congregating in the lobby area as would be customary. Also, at approximately 9:50 AM, the family will begin the process of paying their final respects, so we would strongly encourage that those people who would like to pass by the casket arrive between 9:30- 9:45 AM.
