Faye Ilene Travnikar was born in Detroit Michigan on December 2, 1924 and died on November 26, 2012 – six days before her 88th birthday in the home of Sandy and Tom Vukonich (daughter and son-in-law) of Metamora, Michigan, where she has resided since 2009. Faye was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fred Travnikar; her son, Guy Thomas Wedyke and her grandson, Ronald James Wedyke. Faye also shared a wonderful relationship with Fred’s children who have remained dear to her heart: Travis and Shelia, Jim and Bob, Joyce and Dave Banchiu, JoAnne and John. Her extended grandchildren family include Adam Banchiu; Sam, Jeanette and Seth Vukonich. There aren’t enough pages to list her many friends that she considered “family”, but I know, as her daughter, that she loved and cherished her special friendship with Jackie Burger and Cathy Dunn.
First and foremost, Faye was an artist; she owned and operated Faye’s Ceramic Studio in Ferndale, Michigan in the 1970’s. She and her husband, Fred moved to Foresthill, California in 1982 where they spent 27 years together until his death in 2009. They were both heavily involved with the Warren McKeon American Legion Post 587 where Faye served as President of the American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed her association with the Friendship Club and the Over 50 Club. Her love of painting lead her to volunteer as a teacher at the Senior Center in Foresthill and taught tole painting to children at the Middle School and continued to operate an artist studio in their home. Faye and Fred travelled extensively together for pleasure and to many arts and craft shows to sell their wares.
Faye’s second love was that of playing games – any games: cards, poker, board games, scrabble anything that involved a challenge. Age was not a factor when making friends and in fact she named her weekly card playing group in Foresthill, CA, the “Ya-Ya Sisters”, whose ages ranged from the early 40’s to the late 80’s. In her 80’s, Faye also learned to expertly use a computer to sell items on E-Bay – the thrill of the bidding process excited her. When she moved back to Michigan to live with her daughter and son-in-law (Sandy & Tom Vukonich) in 2009, she learned how to use Facebook as a main source of contact with her friends back in Foresthill, California. Her list of friends through the game of Farmville and Words-with-Friends is endless. She joined the Lake Orion Senior Center when she moved back to Michigan, where she met and made many friends who played a weekly game of scrabble.
There will not be a formal funeral service here in Michigan as it was her wish to be cremated and buried with her husband in Foresthill, California. Her family and friends will arrange a memorial service at the Warren McKeon American Legion Hall in Foresthill, California at a future date. Any donations, in her memory may be sent to the American Legion-Post 587, P.O. Box 433, Foresthill, CA 95631
