Obituary for Duane Lee Grandy

Duane Lee Grandy was born on January 2, 1958 to Shirley and Lee Grandy. Duane, an only child, was never lonely, always surrounded by a large group of fun, loving and mischievous cousins. He attended high school in Alma where, by the time he graduated in 1976, Duane had made many lifelong friendships. As a young boy, Duane always dreamed of flying which was ironic as he always had a fear of heights. An 18th birthday gift of flying lessons from his parents and his desire to become a pilot was undeniable. He logged his first solo flight on June 19, 1976. Duane went on take classes at Lansing Community College to further his education towards becoming a career pilot.

With his career on track, Duane was ready to move on toward another life goal. A chance meeting with Gail Coolman on White Lake Golf Course in June, 1988 became the start of a beautiful love story. After only knowing each other for six months, Duane and Gail were married December 30, 1988 in Alma, Michigan. The newlyweds enjoyed raising and showing boxers together and eventually purchased their first home in Ortonville, Michigan. In April, 1994 their first son, Douglas was born. Son, Steven, completed the family in August, 1995. The young family built their own dream home on a beautiful piece of land in Ortonville. In this home, the boys grew up, they celebrated life events, entertained family and friends, shared much love and laughter and created beautiful memories. Duane and Gail downsized to a cozy, vintage home in the Village of Oxford in 2015.

Duane continued his career as a pilot. He was a certified airline transport pilot with XII airplane type ratings allowing him to captain those different aircraft. During his commercial airline career, he flew with Aerodynamics, Inc. (ADI) and the Thyssenkrupp Budd Company. Duane experienced many amazing places and people through his work. Duane found himself most content and fulfilled in his last position with R.H. Bluestein & Co. More than an employer, Bob Bluestein became a generous, considerate, trusted and respected friend.

When Duane wasn’t working, he was busy enjoying family and friends. He trained in Tae Kwon Do with Doug and Steve and ultimately, together, they obtained their 2nd degree black belts. Duane also had fun building and flying remote controlled airplanes. Winter work travels to Florida provided a perfect time and place to play. Duane loved to duck hunt with one of his most cherished friends, Brad Braun. They endured the poor weather that came with the sport which gave birth to more humorously entertaining stories than ducks!

Duane received the devasting cancer diagnosis in 2014. He endured some very tough treatments and many rough days but always remained optimistic. Duane fought the good fight right to the end. In his last days, due to the wonderful, tender care of Gail, Doug and Steve, with the support of hospice, family and friends, there is no doubt that Duane left this world knowing that he was incredibly loved.

Duane will always be lovingly remembered by his wife, Gail, son, Douglas, son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Emily. He was the pride and joy of his mother and father, Shirley and the late Lee Grandy. His many aunts, uncles and cousins will forever cherish their memories of Duane. Duane will also be fondly remembered and missed by his many friends.

A memorial service will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors, 39 W. Burdick, Oxford on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 3 PM with visitation beginning at the funeral home at 1 PM.
