Duane J. Salswedel, age 87 of Oxford, December 6, 2018. He is survived by his wife Dawn, to whom he was happily married for 67 years. He is also survived by his brother, Dale (Jan) Salswedel; sister, Judy Cochran; three children, DuAnne Cook, Debra Dearing and Darrin (Lily) Salswedel; four grandchildren Christy (Nick) Roberts, Katelyn (Jon) Perry, Zoe Salswedel and Trey Salswedel, and one great-grandson, Aiden Perry.
Mr. Salswedel worshiped at the Community of Christ Church in Lake Orion for over 62 years. He was a member of the priesthood and served as the congregation's Presiding Officer. He served on the Oxford Public Library Board of Trustees for nearly four decades. He spent the majority of those years running the meetings as chairman. Duane was involved with other area organizations, like the Northeast Oakland Historical Society & Museum in downtown Oxford and was an active volunteer for Love In the Name of Christ of North Oakland County (Love INC), a nonprofit cooperative effort that links churches, volunteers, and service agencies and helps them to organize their efforts by reaching out to the poor and disadvantaged.
He also served on the Advisory Board of Oxford’s campus of Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital (POH), was Chairman of the Public Library Trustee Association of Oakland County (PLTAOC). He served on the Oxford Village Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) for 32 years and chaired the ZBA for 28 of those years. He was retired from a 40 career in Administration and Management at American Aggregates in Oxford. He spent two years at Michigan State University before joining the Air Force during the Korean War. He retired after four years with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
His life of service also stretched to those experiencing a loss of a loved one in the community, as he worked for many years at Bossardet Funeral Home and continued on after it became Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors. The amount of families who encountered Duane's welcome into the funeral home were many, and he also performed as minister for countless families.
