Obituary for Daniel "Dan" Lubelan

Daniel "Dan" Lubelan, age 89, died December 6, 2018, less than 50 minutes shy of his 90th birthday. Dan was born on December 7, 1928 to John and Amelia Lubelan in Windsor, Ontario. He went to Windsor High School and had vocational training in wood model making and patten making. Dan was too young to serve in World War II but he did serve in the Canadian Navy as a musician playing the trumpet, and even played on the ship the HMS Hunter. He moved to the United States in 1958 and was naturalized.

While attending a church youth group and singing at the church, Dan met his future wife, Elizabeth “Betty” June McPherson. They were married on June 23, 1951 and remained married for 59 years, until Betty’s death in 2010. Together they created a family with three children; Al, Catherine and Dan.

Dan thought about going into police work in Windsor but also loved woodworking. He did both for awhile, serving as a police officer for two years, but ultimately decided upon woodworking. He went to work for Chrysler a couple years before 1956 and was with them for 14 years before being laid off during the automotive downturn.

In the 1970's he started his own fiberglass business that produced bulletproof door panels for the inside of police cars and taxies. He worked at GMC as a model maker and patten maker for 25 years. Dan was the "go to" man in the model shop for things nobody else could do. He retired in the 90's and he and Betty moved to Elmira, near Gaylord.

While he was raised Baptist, Betty liked more of the Pentecostal style of church, which took them to the Assemblies of God. They led worship at the Troy Assembly of God and attended Brightmore Tabernacle. Dan loved the Lord his whole life and had a big heart for missions, making multiple trips to Paraguay. Dan loved children and would take candy to distribute on mission trips, and also on each trip Dan would buy new tools and give them out to people there who wanted to work. Dan and Betty sponsored 14 Latin American children.

Dan was a collector of things, in particular little metal model cars, especially the kind of cars he worked on at GMC. A lover of music, he played the trumpet and enjoyed singing and leading worship. Dan and Betty went on cruises in Alaska, traveled to Ireland and Scotland and around the United States as well. They had a condominium in Florida. Most of Dan’s other hobbies revolved around woodworking. He loved to do things for the church, like when he built a new pulpit. He built all of the cabinets in a new home that he and Al had built. He actually built a few houses.

Dan was preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty, his parents John and Amelia, and his sister Ruth. He is survived by his sister Rose who lives in Toronto; his loving children Al (Vicki) Lubelan, Catherine (Jim) McIntosh and Dan (Kathy) Lubelan; grandchildren Kristin (Nathan) Hoard, Kimberly (Joe) Fedorinchik, Kurt (Lois) Lubelan, Nicole (Brandon) Smith, Christopher McIntosh, Keri (Nick) Rowe and Danny (Samantha) Lubelan; and great-grandchildren Griffin, Brady, Cooper, Joey, Theo, Bella, Talon, Stone, Tesia, Audrey, Chloe, Gracie, Boston, Meredith and Danny.

Visitation will take place at LakePoint Community Church, 1550 W. Drahner Rd, Oxford on Monday, December 10, 2018 from 9-11 AM with a funeral service beginning at 11 AM.
