Obituary for Cora La Joie

Cora Ellen La Joie, 85, passed away on May 9th, 2015 at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester, Michigan. She was born on July 01, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to Louis and Clara Johnson.

Cora grew up in Detroit, Michigan. She graduated from Pershing High School in Detroit, Michigan in 1947. After high school she began working for Fox Theatre as a secretary where she worked for 8 years until she was married and began a career as a house wife raising her five sons. In 1979 she started working for the Detroit Public Schools in the attendance department at the School Center Building and ended her career at Finney High School. She retired in 1989 after 10 years of service. Cora attended college at Wayne County Community College in Detroit, Michigan where she received a certificate in Environmental Science.

Cora married Lawrence Edward La Joie in 1957 in Detroit, Michigan. They were happily married for 24 years until Lawrence Edward’s death in 1982. Cora was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lake Orion, Michigan. She was baptized at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Detroit, Michigan in 1929. Mom enjoyed outdoor hobbies including camping and walking along the beaches of the Great Lakes in search of a Petoskey stone. She also enjoyed ceramics and most recently cross stitching. Mom enjoyed reading mystery novels, going to the theatre, and taking rides in the country. Mom also received the Distinguished Service award from the Detroit Area Council of the Boy Scouts. She spent many years as a den mother for both the Cub Scouts and Blue Birds. She volunteered her time for many years supporting and working in the Council offices in Detroit, Michigan.

Cora was preceded in death by her parents Louis sister Barbara, husband Lawrence Edward, and her unnamed daughter who died after birth in 1958.

Cora is survived by her sons Steven Gerard La Joie, Louis Edward & Nancy La Joie, Phillip Andrew La Joie, Laurence Christopher & Kathy (Trombley) La Joie, and Jon Raymond & Judy La Joie; her grandchildren Monica (Gordon) La Joie, Amanda La Joie, William Kinsell, Daniel La Joie, Joshua La Joie, Christopher La Joie, Brandi La Joie, Jason La Joie and Jacques & Krista La Joie; and her great-grandchildren Luna, Naomi, Jesse, and Leyland.

Funeral from Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors, 39 W. Burdick, Oxford, Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 1 PM. Father Michael Verschaeve officiating. Visitation will begin Tuesday at 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation. (
