Obituary for Betty Marie Popa

Betty Marie Popa, age 89 of Oxford, Michigan, passed away at Crittenton Hospital on April 12, 2014.

Betty was born June 6, 1924, in South Lyon, Michigan, to Raymond and Viola (Ennis) Hall. She grew up and started her family in Rochester, Michigan, where she met her husband, Basil Popa, while he was serving active duty in the United States Air Force. Betty and Basil were married on Dec. 1, 1947.

During her time in Rochester, Betty worked as a cafeteria manager for Rochester Community Schools, a position she later retired from. While in Rochester and after moving to Oxford, Betty remained a dedicated member of St. Andrew Catholic Church. She loved playing cards, piecing puzzles together, crocheting, going to Bingo and trips to the casino. Once a month, Betty could be found playing Pinochle with family and friends as part of a card club. She also enjoyed and participated in gatherings with The Red Hat Club, of which she was a member.

Betty is survived by her son, Michael (Jean) Popa; 11 grandchildren, Sasha (Andrew) Schaedig, Adam (Brittney Moody) Popa, Sarah (Jeremy Schafrick) Popa, Garrett Popa, Lee (Allison) Howard, Steve (Tracy) Howard, Brian (Evelyn) St. John, Melanie St. John, Lisa (Ted) VandenBrink, Paul (Alyssa) St. John, and Michael St. John; 17 great grandchildren, Isabel and Jakob Schaedig, Alexandra Howard, Amanda Howard, Edward and Devon Grubaugh, Jacob and Autumn Dast, Maddie, Bailey and Mason Pilon, Greyson and Wyatt VandenBrink, Landon, Michael Jr., Salena and Chloe St. John. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Popa; daughter, Linda St. John; brothers, Fred, Willard and Dwayne Hall; sisters Jean Bulak and Dorothy Kelly.

Friends may attend visitation at Lynch and Sons Funeral Directors, 39 W. Burdick, Oxford, on Tuesday, April 15 from 2-8 p.m., with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will resume on Wednesday, April 16 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1400 Inglewood Ave, Rochester, from 11:30 a.m. through the time of the funeral mass, which begins at 12:30 p.m. Burial will take place at Eastlawn Cemetery in Orion Township.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Children’s Heart Foundation, an organization Betty was passionate about and supported.
